Situated in the centre of Cheshire, Middlewich has good communications based upon the M6 motorway, which is only two and a half miles from the centre of the town. Click here for a location map. The road links mean that Manchester Airport is only half an hour away, Crewe Railway Station is fifteen minutes and Liverpool Docks an hour or so! This is fine if you have a car, however there is an ongoing campaign to improve the public transport, especially the reopening of the rail line to passengers. Middlewich has a tremendous community spirit and has been recognised recently by a number of awards. The page on the left is constantly being updated as there are so many individuals and groups that have been recognised. Most people know the town because of its canals and heritage, hence it has become a tourist centre. This has surprised many "old" Middlewichers as they find it not such an interesting place. Then again, we frequently don't realise what is on our doorstep. The Folk & Boat Festival is now one of the most successful events in the English Folk Calendar, with the revitalised Rose Festival and the Annual Bricker Cup ensuring a wide range of events throughout Spring & Summer. The Heritage of Middlewich is not forgotten, with a bi-annual Heritage Festival taking place in September (Click here for further details) of every "odd" year. The primary landmark is the medieval St Michael and All Angels Church, which has its own website (here). The church has dominated the skyline of Middlewich for many years and still has a bullet hole or two dating from the Civil War. One of the two Cenotaph memorials is to the west of the church, on top of the recently refurbished "Bull Ring". Initially, the townsfolk wondered why so much money was being spent on the Bull Ring, but there have been very few complaints since it has been finished, indeed the praise for the way that it has opened up the area and enhanced the look of the church and the cenotaph has been most welcome. The usage of the Bull Ring by performing artists, farmers' markets and consultations have also been tremendous to see and a "Green Apple" award confirmed the view that it is indeed a very sensible use of space. This page will be added to as people submit more information, so please check back on what the town has become today. |
